About JEPI
JEPI is an actively managed income fund with two parts. Most of the money sits in a portfolio of large U.S. stocks chosen by J.P. Morgan's research team, with a tilt toward steadier, lower-volatility companies. The rest, up to about 20% of the fund, goes into equity-linked notes (ELNs) that sell call options on the S&P 500.
Those option sales are where most of JEPI's monthly income comes from. The trade-off is familiar for covered call funds: the fund collects premium every month, but gives up some of the upside when the market rallies hard. Its lower-volatility stock picks are meant to smooth the ride in down markets.
Because much of the income comes through the ELNs, a large share of JEPI's distributions is usually taxed as ordinary income rather than as qualified dividends. That makes JEPI a popular choice inside IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts.
