About SPYI

SPYI was NEOS's first high-income ETF. It holds the stocks in the S&P 500 and sells call options on the S&P 500 index (SPX) to fund its monthly payouts. It may also buy SPX calls at higher strike prices, a call spread that lets the fund keep some upside in rising markets.

Because it uses SPX index options, the option gains and losses fall under Section 1256 and are taxed 60% long-term and 40% short-term. NEOS reports that SPYI's distributions have been classified as return of capital, and the fund also looks for tax loss harvesting opportunities.

Compared with its Nasdaq sibling QQQI, SPYI sits on a broader and less tech-heavy stock portfolio and has a longer track record, while usually paying a little less.
