About QQQI

QQQI holds the companies in the Nasdaq-100 and runs an options strategy on the Nasdaq-100 index itself (NDX). It sells index call options to collect premium for its monthly payouts, and it can also buy calls at higher strikes, which lets it keep part of the upside in strong rallies instead of capping it completely.

Using index options instead of options on an ETF matters for taxes. NDX options are Section 1256 contracts, so gains and losses on them are taxed 60% long-term and 40% short-term no matter how long they were held. NEOS also reports that QQQI's distributions have been classified as return of capital, which generally lowers your cost basis rather than being taxed right away.

The stock side is concentrated in big tech, so QQQI rises and falls with the Nasdaq. The options add income and soften small drops, but they do not protect against a real sell-off.
