About SCHD

SCHD owns 100 U.S. companies picked by a strict set of rules. To qualify, a company needs at least 10 straight years of dividend payments, and REITs are left out. The survivors are ranked on four things: free cash flow compared with total debt, return on equity, dividend yield and five-year dividend growth. The top 100 make the fund.

No single stock can be more than 4% of the index and no sector more than 25%, so the fund stays spread out. The lineup is rebuilt every March. Health care, consumer staples and energy tend to be its biggest sectors, and big tech is a small slice, which is why SCHD often behaves very differently from the S&P 500.

SCHD is built for dividends that grow over time rather than the biggest possible check today. Most of its payouts have historically been qualified dividends, and at a tiny expense ratio it is one of the cheapest ways to own a basket of dividend growers.
