About VIG

VIG is built around dividend growth, not dividend size. It tracks the S&P U.S. Dividend Growers Index, which requires at least 10 consecutive years of dividend increases. It then removes the highest-yielding 25% of eligible companies, because an unusually high yield can be a sign a dividend is at risk.

What is left is a portfolio of quality companies with long records of raising payouts, weighted by size with a cap on any single stock. That tilts VIG toward large, profitable businesses, including some big technology and health care names that SCHD and VYM hold less of.

The trade-off is a low starting yield. VIG is designed for investors who care more about how fast their income grows over the years, and about total return, than about the size of today's dividend.
