About VYM

VYM tracks the FTSE High Dividend Yield Index, which takes large U.S. companies and keeps the ones forecast to pay above-average dividends. REITs are excluded. The result is a broad basket of several hundred established companies, weighted by size.

Because it owns so many stocks, VYM is far more spread out than a concentrated dividend fund. Financials, health care, industrials, consumer staples and energy usually make up much of the portfolio. Its yield typically sits between a plain S&P 500 fund and higher-yield dividend strategies.

Vanguard charges a very low expense ratio, and VYM's dividends have historically been mostly qualified. It pays quarterly and is a common choice for investors who want broad dividend exposure without picking individual stocks.
